On the basis of maps from the 18th and 19th
centuries, a retrospective analysis was carried out of documentary
settlement and landscape data extending back to
the Middle Ages with the intention of identifying and dating
general structural and dynamic features of the cultural
landscape in a selected region of Zealand. The aim was
to locate, compare and contrast intensively (arable agriculture,
settlement) and extensively (animal husbandry,
woodland) exploited areas. The study area proved to have
been divided up into three distinctive zones at least since
the Middle Ages.
