CURRENT RESEARCH 

  • Monograph project: Fair Copy: Gender, Originality, and the Making of American Literature (under contract, University of Massachusetts Press, Series: Becoming Modern: Studies in the Long 19C) The project  frames ekphrasis, the literary description of a work of visual art, and other forms of literary and visual copy-work, as key practices for understanding the discussions of nationalism, originality, and gender that dominated U.S. literary circles during the first half of the nineteenth century.  It has been supported by reasearch grants from the American Antiquarian Society, the Maine Women Writers Collection, and the British Library.
  • Monograph project (research stage): Jacob Riis, Documentary Photography, and the Image-Text. Supported by Novo Nordisk. Investigates Riis's imagetexts in the context of the urban reform movement, biopolitics, and immigration in New York at the turn of the last century.
