Elisabeth Willadsen

Professor with special responsibilities

As associate profession in speech and language disorder, I do research in individuals with cleft lip and palate. My special interest is the consequences of the condition for the early language development and acquisition of phonology.
My research consists primarily of longitudinal investigations that follow groups of children over a number of years.

Since 1997 I have taken part in a primarily Scandinavian research project that follows 450 children born with unilateral cleft lip and palate from birth until adulthood.
Likewise I take part in an international research project that primarily investigates if timing of surgical closure of the palate has an influence on speech development. This project has enrolled 558 participants with isolated cleft palate from 5 different countries (Brazil, United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway and Denmark) and includes 24 treatment centers og around 300 practitioners from many disciplines such as plastic surgeons, speech and language therapists, geneticists, orthodontists, E-N-T doctors, nurses and psychologists. The project is funded by the American National Institute of Health and continues until the summer of 2020.

I teach courses on cleft lip and palate, childrens' early language development, phonological development and interventions for speech sound disorders.

I supervise BA projects and MA theses within the fields of my research and teaching.
