Language, Coloniality and Nordic Exceptionalism
Research seminar
Nordic colonial history has only recently become the subject of critical academic inquiry. However, the linguistic side of colonialism is still relatively unexplored. Against this backdrop, the aim of this seminar is to focus on this particular theme. On the one hand, we examine the linguistic consequences of colonialism; on the other hand, we investigate linguistic constructions of colonial relationships and colonial subjects. With invited speakers who research languages in (post-)colonial Nordic contexts, we will initiate a dialogue between different strands of existing research, and we hope to pave the way for more research-based knowledge about languages in (post-)colonial Nordic contexts. The invited speakers' study, inter alia, Greenlandic, Faroese, Kven, Sami and Meänkieli – Nordic languages that can be understood in a post-and decolonial framework.
