My research is concerned with children's reading comprehension difficulties and components of reading comprehension such as inference-making and vocabulary knowledge.

Current research

Self-teaching of new vocabulary: Enhancing children's word learning during independent reading

The project aims to help Danish reading teachers and reading counsellors develop new perspectives on how to stimulate their students in Grades 3 and 4. Special educational courses will be developed and delivered to achieve this. The courses will involve the participating teachers in the designing and trying out activities to stimulate their students's self-teaching of new vocabulary when reading texts on their own in and outside of school.

The courses will be developed in a co-operation between researchers from the Centre for Reading Research (University of Copenhagen), consultants and planners from the municipality of Høje-Taastrup, and educators from schools within the municipality. The ambition is to find ways of transferring ideas and insights from international research on vocabulary development to instructional approaches that will work in the context of Danish primary and lower secondary schools.
