The figure of the villain Samaritan in the Qur´an
Q. 20:87-99

In the Qur´anic text, reference to other “mock texts” is re-presented through transtextual relations. In the several accounts about Moses and the sons of Israel, one accounts stands out, namely the account in the mekkan sura 20: 4-109, in which a narrative figure - “the Samaritan” is depicted as a villain character. He was blamed for handcrafting the golden calf and misleading the sons of Israel in the wilderness after their victorious exit from Egypt (Q 20-87-99).
This paper will deal with the early Qur´anic texts´ literary reconstruction of the figure of the Samaritan the basis of two conflicting mock “narratives/texts”. Mock texts, in this context, do not necessarily stand for the Jewish and Samaritan canonised narratives about each group´s genealogy.
