This special issue aims to investigate the varied ways in which memories and experiences of slavery have been, and continue to be, negotiated in the light of different cultural and historical framings of slavery around the globe in the long period following the complicated and in itself long process we know as “abolition”. The main point is to highlight the complexity of this negotiation process in different parts of the world and at different times, and emphasize the difficulties and challenges that it poses for the reading and understanding of narratives on slavery in post-slavery.
