EDUCABLE: Educational Socialisation in Contemporary Digitalised Societies

The EDUCABLE project employes a linguistic ethnographic approach to study young people’s engagement in digital communities alongside their everyday practice at school and their reflections on educational influences and experiences. Thereby, it explores how digital publics, influencers and alternative schooling communities possibly impact youths’ educational and occupational aspirations, or potentially disrupt assumed connections between social background and education.

Technological possibilities of retrieving knowledge and sharing experiences across time and space pose new challenges for the status of educational institutions and ideologies, but the public and political debate focus mostly on how digital devices, not content or circulated ideas, affect schooling. To qualify the debate and advance our theoretical understanding of education as enterprise in contemporary digitalised societies, EDUCABLE takes seriously digital media as social domain in the investigation of educational socialisation.

Across four data sets and four work packages, we address the following questions:

How is educability constructed and enacted in everyday school life and digital encounters?

How do students reflect on their educational path and future aspirations?

Which cultural models of educability can we identify across these domains to illuminate the challenges and refine our theorisation of contemporary mass education systems?
