N2 - SUMMARY:Gender and Genre in “Taxa”:Sensitive Masculinity and Mothers on TrialThe article looks at the new Danish prime-timesoap opera “Taxa”, asking why a usuallydevaluated women’s genre as the soap operahas succeeded in addressing the entire familyin prime time on Sunday evening. The serialis discussed in the light of Christine Gledhill’sstatement that in the new prime-time soap“melodrama and realism, women’s andmen’s culture, intersect (...) in a particularlyproductive way”. I conclude that while it ittrue that the male characters in “Taxa” aremulti-dimensional personalities, women inthis Danish soap opera are not only almostabsent as writers and directors, but the femalefigures are also highly mythologized. Thusthe costs of the soap genre going mainstreamare marginalization and trivialization ofwomen.
