N2 - Today the importance of sport for national identity is evident, but when did the cultivation of 'Danishness' come to the fore for the first time within competitive sports? In recent times, Danish national identity has become a "hot" theme in Danish historical research resonating in both the media and among the general public, likely because the theme is felt to be both relevant and explosive in contemporary Denmark.
