This article is a theoretical investigation of how dissociation and constructed memory in borderline-patients are represented in the following three selected psychoanalytical theories; Melanie Kleins theory on splitting-dominated defence, Donald Winnicotts theory on the false self, and Jean Laplanches theory on perverse seduction. In the article we sug-gest that the selected psychoanalytic borderline-conceptualizations contain significant emphasis on the inherent dissociative ego-structure. It is concluded that most of the applied psychotherapeutic traditions underestimate that significant mental states are not represented in the psyche because of the patient’s dissociative defenc
